General directions

Areas of research:

 

· Study of the seismic regime and seismic hazard assessment;

· Overall, detailed and microseismiczoning of territories;

· Monitoring and prediction of earthquakes;

· Evaluation of seismic risk and prediction of damage from earthquakes;

· Geodynamic monitoring and forecast of dangerous technogenic processes;

· Creation of databases in the field of seismology.


Monitoring of seismic regime carries out the  Experimental-Methodical Seismological Expedition by Kazakhstan.

The experimental base consists of a network of integrated geophysical observatories, seismic, hydro-geochemical, hydrodynamic stations, geophysical observation points, biological objects,  points of space geodesy GPS, chemical laboratory, data acquisition and transmission, a local center, data bank.

At the territory of Almaty,  the engineering seismometric service of 15 points is established, it has a digital strong motion stations ETNA, directed to solve  the problems of seismic zoning. For continuous earthquakes of varying strength and distance, a complex of modern equipment, including a digital seismic station IDS-24, GSR-18, Q-730, DAS-6102 and  seismic system "Volcano" is used. For monitoring of current crustal movements, the  works on Space Geodesy and  GPS are carried out. Processing incoming information is carried out with the use of modern information technology and software.

 

The main results of fundamental research:

 

  • The foci of earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 6.0 are formed mainly in the granite-gneiss of the earth's crust, and with M ≥ 7,0 are located at the interface granite-gneiss and basalt layers. Correlation between the parameters of the seismic regime and changes of modern movements of the earth surface.
  • The two-dimensional P and S-velocity and density models of the Earth's crust on new geotraverses are developed. The technique of seismic parameterization of seismogenic zones is developed, and the parameterization of Jungar-North Tien Shan region is carried out. The mutual coordination of P-velocity and density models for geotraverses Turkestan, Tamdybulak-Farabi, Farabi, Babatag, Tejan-Karabekaul-Koitash is held. For the same geotraverses, the  S-speed simulation, with taken into account the correlations of Vp,  Vs and ρ,  is carried out.
The mapping and digital models of the long-term average seismicity parameters for the calculation of seismotectonic deformations are developed; the  mapping and digital models of the parameters of earthquake focal mechanisms for the calculation of seismotectonic deformations on the territory of Kazakhstan are developed;
The local and regional banks of the parameters of digital records for seismic hazard assessment territory of Almaty are created; the analysis and modeling of the spectral characteristics of ground motions based on strong motion is carried out; the dependence of the attenuation of peak accelerations, for seismic risk calculation program, are specified; the probabilistic models for seismic hazard assessment of the rock, at the example of the city of Almaty, are developed. The techniques of individual seismic risk assessment are developed, as well as a methodology for individual seismic risk maps for regions located at the earthquake-prone areas of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on the example of the city of Almaty, are created..
A list of effective measures to enhance the protection of critical facilities and infrastructure industries to ensure their seismic safety is composed. The methodology of technical diagnostics of strategic facilities based on data obtained through experimentation is composed.
A scientific and technical justification for the need for seismic monitoring of strategic facilities is made and the general principles of organization of seismological monitoring are developed. The systems of seismic monitoring of oil and gas fields, mining and energy sectors, taking into account their specific characteristics are developed. The generalized rules for creating sites and conduct seismic monitoring of strategic facilities, to ensure their protection from the effects of seismic processes are compiled.

 

 

According to the results of basic and applied research,  the next maps are developed:

 

  • seismic zoning of West Kazakhstan region on a scale of 1:1,000,000;
  • seismic zoning of the Almaty region on a scale of 1:1,000,000;
  • seismic zoning Zhambyl scale 1:1,000,000.
